US-EU Dialogue on Sustainable Packaging
3 May 2023
16.00-18.00 CET
followed by a reception 18.00-19.00
European Parliament
In May of 2023, the second meeting of the United Nations Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-2) on an agreement to reduce plastic waste will be held in Paris. Additionally, the EU Parliament and Council are currently assessing the Commission’s proposed Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. These two initiatives showcase how tackling the issue of sustainable packaging will require a global, multi-sectoral, collaborative effort.
The U.S. Mission to the European Union and the European Food Forum (EFF) plan to facilitate a dialogue where U.S. and European packaging experts can discuss practical solutions for sustainable packaging with politicians, industry, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders. This dialogue will provide an opportunity for packaging engineers, academics, sustainability experts, and consumer and civil society representatives on both sides of the Atlantic to talk about opportunities and challenges in the transition towards more a more sustainable future of packaging. What regulatory framework can promote viable solutions and foster innovation while reducing packaging waste? How can research and innovation help support the transition to more circular packaging?
