Food security: the importance of circularity to food system transformation
16 April 2024
17.30-20.00 CET
Food security is a critical issue: today, 2.4 billion people struggle to get regular access to sufficient food, yet 1/3 of all food is either lost or wasted and the food system is responsible for 1/3 of all global greenhouse gas emissions. As the world’s population surges towards 9.2 billion by 2040, providing healthy and affordable diets for all in ways that don’t damage the environment but support a resilient and equitable food chain and delivers true food security requires a holistic approach. Reduction of food loss and waste together with a transition to more circular practices throughout the food value chain will be essential part of the required shift. This session will look at how farmers and growers, processors, packagers, distributors, policy makers, and consumers must work together to transform the way food is grown, produced, processed, packaged, distributed and consumed.
